Vorrhax
Hunger Incarnate
Vorrhax is a cathedral-sized panther whose eyes burn like molten iron and whose maw seems to open into a darkness that eats light. It moves with impossible feline grace for its bulk, each step warping the air around it as though something within is always reaching outward. What makes Vorrhax terrifying at the table is less raw damage than its appetite: it devours not only flesh but momentum, magic, and hope — swallowing spells, crushing morale with a thunderous roar, and dragging unfortunate foes into a cavernous throat where even magic feels thinner.

Multiattack. The Vorrhax makes two attacks: one with its Bite and one with its Claw, or it may make two Claw attacks instead.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10+6) piercing damage. If the target is a creature of Large size or smaller, Vorrhax can attempt to Grapple it (escape DC 18). If Vorrhax starts its turn with a creature grappled in its jaws, it can attempt to Swallow the creature (see Swallow).
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) slashing damage.
Frightful Roar (Recharge 5-6). Vorrhax unleashes a thunderous roar. Each creature of Vorrhax's choice within 60 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Swallow. If Vorrhax has a creature grappled in its jaws, it can use an action to attempt to swallow it. The grappled target must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw. On a success, it escapes the jaws and falls prone in a space adjacent to Vorrhax. On a failure, it is swallowed, taking 21 (6d6) acid damage at the start of each of Vorrhax's turns. A swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, has total cover against attacks from creatures outside Vorrhax, and can use its action to try to deal 30 slashing or bludgeoning damage to the inside of Vorrhax's maw (no modifiers). If Vorrhax drops to 0 hit points, it regurgitates swallowed creatures and they fall prone in a space adjacent to it.
Consume Spell (Recharge 6). When Vorrhax is targeted by a spell of 3rd level or lower that affects it or includes it in its area, Vorrhax can use its reaction to attempt to devour the spell. The caster must succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, the spell is absorbed and has no effect on Vorrhax or the area; Vorrhax gains temporary hit points equal to twice the spell's level (minimum 2). On a success, the spell takes effect normally.
Reactive Pounce. When a creature ends its turn within 10 feet of Vorrhax, Vorrhax can make one Claw attack against that creature.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Vorrhax's Maw (Costs 2 Actions). If Vorrhax is grappling a creature with its Bite, it makes one Bite attack against that creature. If the attack hits and the target is not swallowed, the target is automatically grappled.
Devouring Step (Costs 1 Action). Vorrhax moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. If it moves at least 20 feet and ends its movement adjacent to a creature, it can make one Claw attack as part of the same action.
Sunder Warding (Costs 1 Action). Vorrhax lashes out with a shadowed shock that targets a spell effect on itself within 30 feet. The effect must succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or the spell's duration is shortened by 1d4 rounds (to a minimum of 0) or its next triggered effect is suppressed.
Scholars of the Eschaton Circle trace rumors of Vorrhax to an upland fissure called the Mawwort Chasm, where miners first found bones stripped of not only flesh but of runes and enchantments. Miners returned with stories of a great cat that left nothing behind: tools turned to dust, iron that tasted like ash, and wards mysteriously unwoven. The Circle's chronicler, Ileran Vaes, wrote that Vorrhax is not merely a predator but a process — a slow, patient unmaking that favors places where life is dense and spells linger. Tempered by superstition and study, several factions have encountered Vorrhax. The glass-armed wardens of Surnell Gate once baited it with a decoy shrine, only to watch the shrine's blessing collapse into a cold, empty void. The hunters of the Peregrine Covenant call Vorrhax 'Hunger of the Hollow Year' and avoid chasms and subterranean ruins in which it nests. Strange cults, notably the Unravellers of Reth, worship Vorrhax as a force of necessary erasure — to them it is a purifier that consumes the frictions of civilization. Parties that try to outfight Vorrhax without countermeasures find themselves slowly undone; those who study its patterns sometimes return with teeth marks and answers about what happens to eaten magics.
A cat the size of a warhorse, Vorrhax's musculature is visible beneath short, bristling fur that shifts between soot-black and a sheen like dark oil when it moves. Its head is broader than a lion's, with a lower jaw that looks like an extra crescent of black stone; the inside of the mouth is lined with rows of needle teeth and a throat that seems to have no depth. Pallid, rune-gnawed scars trace along its flanks and shoulders — old wounds that never heal. Its tail is long, ending in a tufted fan that ripples like a living banner. Eyes are shallow pits of glowing copper that pulse when it senses magic. Scale reference: standing beside a human (6 ft.), Vorrhax's shoulder reaches a little above a horseman's chest; it can crouch into a doorway only by folding its haunches deeply. Textures: coarse, clotted fur with slick, oily sheen on mane-like ruff; teeth have the matte texture of old iron; paw pads are callused, almost stone-like.
