Calcinder
Failed Draconic Transmutation
Once a curious alchemist, now a shimmering puddle of semi-solid ichor with ragged, fossil-like scales and a toothless maw that remembers how to hiss. Calcinders are maddeningly uncanny: they slither with the ruined posture of a humanoid, leave acid-etched footprints like half-melted boots, and emit a faint, dragonlike rasp when they feed. Individually weak and slow, they are terrifying in numbers — several Calcinders can swarm a corridor, their acidic skin and corrosive breath turning armor and mortar into useless scrap while their collective hunger strips flesh from bone.

Multiattack. The Calcinder makes two Slam attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+2) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage.
Half-Remembered Breath (Recharge 5-6). The Calcinder exhales a gout of corrosive vapors in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.
Corrosive Reflex. When a creature within 5 feet hits the Calcinder with a melee attack, the attacker takes 3 (1d6) acid damage as residual ichor splashes back.
Calcinders are the product of hubris. Centuries ago a fringe alchemical cabal called the Vitrum Conclave sought to graft draconic essence into human flesh to produce living vessels for dragonfire. Most experiments died. A few, twisted and fused with their apparatus, shed their humanity and became Calcinders. The Conclave's notes, later studied by the archivist Master Edrim Solven of the Tower of When, record the first 'melting' — the subject's bones dissolved into crystalline nodules while their memories bled into the ooze. Today Calcinders are most commonly found near ruined laboratories, abandoned distilleries, and caverns where failed transmutation formulas seep into groundwater. They consume organic matter and the remnants of their creator's craft: copper, glass, and weak alloys. Rival scholars and monster-hunters speak of the Guild of Practical Antiquaries, whose salvage crews avoid sites tainted by a 'green sheen' — a telltale sign of Calcinder activity. Legends among fishermen tell of entire riverbanks found honeycombed with green glass where a Calcinder brood chewed through the supports of a bridge to reach easy prey.
Imagine a humanoid silhouette that has collapsed into a low, lapping pool roughly chest-high on a standing person. The surface is glossy and semi-translucent, like melted enamel over bone. Scattered within the ooze are irregular, coal-dark scale-plates — distorted remnants of a draconic desire — and elongated, beadlike nodules that resemble fused teeth along a maw that opens as a ragged slit. When it moves the ooze ripples in thick folds; slow, sinewy filaments lash outward to probe, while thin trails of corrosive residue drip from the underside. Scale texture is cracked and glassy, with pitted metal flakes and the occasional broken ring or button trapped beneath the shimmering skin. Size-wise a Calcinder is about the bulk of a man crouched, its highest point around 4 feet, and when several gather they quickly spread to cover a doorway or narrow stair.
