The Painted Chain
the beer hall beneath the lantern sails
Lanterns drape in scalloped rows from the low ceiling, their warm glow bouncing off strings of mirrored confetti and the polished wood of long communal tables. Music spills from a raised platform of mismatched boards where rotating bands play call-and-response tunes between sets; every Saturday the platform is cleared for the masked dance and the crowd moves like a single breathing thing. The air is heavy with the tang of sourdough meat pies, roasted root veg, sweet spiced apples, and the yeasty foam of casks; laughter and the clack of wooden tankards mix with the whisper of silk masks brushing faces. Entering feels like stepping into a celebration already in motion—eyes watch politely from behind painted masquerade masks, and a curious mix of performers, craftsmen, city clerks, and foreign entertainers crowd the benches.
A battered circular iron hoop painted with concentric carnival colors and a single brass chain draped across it; the paint is flaked and a small paper mask is tacked to the center, no words.

Lantern Sail
5 spA heady mix of the house ale warmed with citrus peel and a splash of spiced cider; it loosens tongues and adds a faint flush of courage, granting advantage on one Performance or Persuasion check made within the next hour (only while the drinker is still pleasantly merry).
