The Gilded Post

the royal road's exchange for horses and secrets

You step through lacquered double doors into a long, high-ceilinged hall where polished beams glint with brass fittings. Warm oil lamps splash light on rugs imported from the south, and a low murmur of measured conversation rises above the clink of silver trays. Couriers in travel-stained livery trade papers at a broad counter while robed envoys are shown to velvet-upholstered benches; groomers and hostlers move with efficient grace. The air smells of scented wax, boiled chestnuts, and the tang of horse oil carried on a chimney draft from the stables beyond. A fireplace of black stone throws latticed shadows; behind the main counter a ledger-stuffed niche and a row of sealed pigeonholes promise both hospitality and safe-keeping for urgent parcels.

Over the door

A carved brass post mounted on polished oak: a horse's hoof ringed in laurel. The metal is buffed to a light; faint gouges near the base look like old horseshoes. No words, just the emblem.

The keeper

Harron Mirel

Human

Manner

Harron runs the Post with the calm precision of a clerk and the pride of a master host: everything has its place and every guest a seat. He is courteous and discreet with higher-paying passengers, but blunt and businesslike with those who try to bend the house rules.

Quirk

Counts incoming riders aloud in an undertone and taps the brass post emblem three times after closing the ledger each evening.

Stats

Use the Commoner stat block; Harron is unarmed but keeps a well-balanced sap under the bar and a small vial of paralytic in his private drawer.
House special

Postmaster's Reserve

2 gp

A small, amber brandy infused with candied orange peel and a whisper of clove; it steadies a nervous hand and grants one advantage on Persuasion checks to close a bargain for the next hour if sipped before speaking.

Bren the Groom · stablehand

A mountain of a man who tends the Post's horses and can pick a lock as easily as he brushes a mane.

A precise, polite woman who arranges rooms, schedules remounts, and reads a guest's temper like a docket.

Marro the Tap-keeper · barmaid

Regulars

Captain Barreg

A courier captain who wants faster mounts and quieter roads — he'll hire muscle for a silver if the price and route suit him.

Delynn of Highridge

A minor envoy who collects gossip like heraldry and is looking for a missing packet sent to the duchy border.

Pale Ireth

A traveler who never sleeps more than an hour and is known to switch horses in the night; he is searching for a sealed ledger lost on the royal road.

Rumours
  1. 1

A sealed dispatch meant for Governor Renshal vanished at the next posting station; Captain Barreg claims a rider from Marrek's Guard was seen riding east with a ragged, blood-stained courier's cloak.

  2. 2

Marrek of the West Gate quietly offers secure rerouting for sensitive letters — he pays handily but demands a favor in return; someone at the Post found a coded list of favored targets in his handwriting.

  3. 3

A ledger kept by the royal roadmaster, known as the 'Blue Folio', lists secret subsidies to certain border inns; Pale Ireth insists a folio-page bearing a burned stamp is hidden among the Post's pigeonholes.

Look out for
Long polished counter with pigeonholes for sealed dispatches; a locked slot (requires DC 15 Sleight of Hand or a key) used for urgent packets.Attached stables and quick-remount service: horses can be readied and swapped within an hour (rolls for horse quality available on request).
