Mnemospiral
Memory-Collecting Hermit
A squat, spiral-shelled hermit with a pearl-bright carapace and a crown of writhing, translucent tendrils, the Mnemospiral trades the vividness of experience like coin. It will offer safe passage, cryptic bargains, or a warm place to sleep — in exchange for a memory pulled from the target's mind. Those who bargain leave lighter in sorrow, sometimes relieved, sometimes bereft of an essential piece of themselves; those who resist may find their most private recollections wrung out and set loose into the shell's glimmering interior.

Multiattack. The Mnemospiral makes one Claw attack and attempts one Mindlick.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) slashing damage.
Mindlick. Melee Spell Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d8+2) psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Intelligence saving throw or lose a nonmagical memory it chooses (or the DM selects) from within the past year. A creature that loses a memory is disoriented: it has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and Intelligence checks for 1 hour. The Mnemospiral stores the stolen memory; the memory can be recovered only if the Mnemospiral is forced to expel it (see Consume Memory).
Consume Memory (Recharge 5-6). The Mnemospiral expels a held memory in a shimmering pulse. Each creature of the Mnemospiral's choice within 20 feet that can see the pulse must succeed on a DC 12 Intelligence saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn as the released recollection floods the mind. On a successful save, a creature takes half the psychic damage and is not stunned. The pulse deals 14 (4d6) psychic damage on a failed save, or 7 (2d6) on a success.
Mnemospirals lurk along rocky coastlines, in mist-locked marshes, and among the basalt stacks where tides and time grind the world down. Folklore calls them the 'lenders of forgetting' — solitary aberrations that appear to sap and hoard mnemonic energy, storing memories like barnacles on the inside of their shells. They do not hunt in packs but sometimes attract a ring of lost travelers and scholars who trade secrets in hopes of retrieving what the spiral has taken. Scholars of the Glass Archivists, notably Edrin Hallow of the Obscuraum, have cataloged accounts of Mnemospiral bargains: promises of safe passage through haunted shoals, ferrying of refugees across spectral fog, and even small favors for the wealthy who value discretion. The mollusk’s hoard of memories is not merely a grave; rumors say the shell sometimes sings those stolen recollections back at night, and anyone listening can see flickers of lives they never lived. Coastal communities such as the cliff town of Vestral's Gate keep offerings of old coins and lullabies to placate the spirals, while a minority of cultists — the Mnemeweavers — seek the creatures to unmake important histories and reweave new ones.
About waist-high on an adult human when extended, the Mnemospiral resembles a squat hermit with a heavy, tightly coiled shell that spirals clockwise in perfect proportion. The shell's outer surface is smooth, iridescent, and studded with faintly luminescent rings where stolen memories are said to pulse; small, translucent nodules dot the inner whorl and glow faintly like pinpricked lanterns. The creature's soft body is a muted slate with a banded mantle; dozens of semi-translucent tendrils sprout from around its head and mouth, each ending in a flattened, sensory pad. Where a normal hermit would have antennae, the Mnemospiral has thin, filamentous cilia that shimmer with the colors of remembered emotions when it feeds. Its underside bears three muscular, webbed foot pads for slow locomotion; it can retract fully into its shell, sealing the aperture with a ring of chitinous plates that fit like a lock.
