Malkurri
Granary Sentinel
Malkurri appears as the bleached skeleton of a domestic cat wrapped in threadbare swathes of straw and grain husks, yet its empty eye-sockets burn with a cold, watchful intent. It pads silently through lofts and barns, bone claws clicking like loose chaff, and wherever it settles rats and vermin go still as though listening for an unseen command. Farmers whisper that a Malkurri will not leave until the last mouse is driven out — and that it answers only to the memory of a household it once belonged to.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) piercing damage.
Gnaw (Recharge 5-6). Malkurri makes a bite attack that deals an additional 3 (1d6) necrotic damage as it seems to draw a little of the target's warmth into the air. The target must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll as a chill settles into its bones.
Eerie Hiss. When a Small or Tiny beast that Malkurri perceives as vermin enters within 10 feet of it, that creature must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of its next turn. (Wisdom save DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + Wisdom modifier = 8 + 2 + 1.)
Malkurri are common in rural regions where families once bound protective charms to favored barn animals. When a beloved field cat died guarding a granary, farmers or desperate householders sometimes performed simple rites—binding a few stalks of the season's last grain, whispering the cat's name, and tucking a shard of pottery from the hearth into its chest. Such rites do not grant full life, but they bind intent: a Malkurri arises tethered to the place and duty it knew in life. Scholars of the Thanatarium of Kestel note that Malkurri are not malicious; they are animate embodiments of duty. They do not hunger for flesh and rarely stray far from granaries, seed stores, and millhouses. Factions such as the Agrarian Hand sometimes keep a Malkurri as a living talisman against vermin, while folk-heroes like granary-warden Breen of Halrun were said to have negotiated the devotion of a Malkurri in exchange for a small shrine and nightly offerings of warm milk. Priests warn, however, that disturbing the bonds that hold a Malkurri — by destroying its keepsakes or razing its lair — can unmoor it, and a displaced sentinel can become a restless menace.
A compact, emaciated feline skeleton roughly the size of a house cat (about 18 inches long, not counting tail), composed of pale, slightly pitted bone. Thin strips of sun-bleached linen and crumbling straw cling to its spine and shoulders, and flecks of old grain are lodged between ribs. Its skull is unnaturally elongated at the snout, with cracked teeth and two shallow, soot-darkened hollows where eyes once were; faint, grey motes of chill seem to swirl in those hollows. The vertebrae are a touch too flexible, allowing a snake-like ripple when it moves; its tail ends in a cluster of brittle straw rather than bone. Scale cues for an artist: place a human farmer's boot nearby for scale (the cat stands knee-high to a seated adult on a bale of hay). Textures: crosshatched bone grain, ragged cloth fibers, compacted straw, and the suggestion of an aura made of tiny floating seeds.
