Copperskein
Bridge Tollkeeper
A hulking automaton of burnished brass and iron, the Copperskein stands sentinel amid snapped masonry and tangled rebar where a once-grand bridge collapsed. Its single inlaid glass eye glows faintly green, and a small, ever-ticking mechanism in its chest chimes with an obsessional cadence. It is terrifying not because it seeks blood, but because it never stops working: it counts, it catalogues, and it enforces tolls even for the dead and the fleeing. Those who try to pass its ruined span find the machine impossibly exacting — it knows the price, will demand it, and will ring its bell until you pay or are chased away by fear itself.

Multiattack. The Copperskein makes two Coinhook attacks.
Coinhook. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+1) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet back and knocked prone as the scoop hooks and upends them.
Tolling Bell (Recharge 5-6). The Copperskein rings the bell set in its face. Each creature of the Copperskein's choice within 10 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of its next turn. A frightened creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of the Copperskein takes 3 (1d6) psychic damage as the machine's counting gears whisper debts into its mind.
Exact Change. When a creature moves into the Copperskein's reach for the first time on a turn, the Copperskein can demand toll. The creature must either drop 1 coin-sized object it is holding (which the Copperskein pockets) or succeed on a DC 11 Intelligence (Investigation) check to bluff the machine with a forged note; on a failure, the creature is considered restrained by a pair of brass fingers (escape DC 11) until the end of its next turn as the Copperskein secures the 'payment'.
Copperskeins were commissioned centuries ago by the Mercantile Guild of Vesh to patrol vital crossings and ensure that tolls and tariffs were collected even during sieges. The original devices were shepherded by clerks and clockwrights from the artisan cabal known as the Scalewrights. When the great flood and the subsequent collapse of the Silver Span left the bridge in ruins, one machine remained embedded in the smashed approach, its programming hardened into an oath to guard that crossing "for as long as coin or traveler requires a toll." Local stories say the Copperskein will accept many kinds of payment — copper, words of tribute, or the naming of debts owed — but it understands value in strange ways. The antiquarian Hestyr Vale wrote a petitionary paper, The Tollkeeper's Ledger, after a near-fatal encounter and insists the machine records more than money: it logs pacts, secrets spoken while under its bell, and bargains broken upon its iron jaw. Bands of thieves called the Broken Ledger have tried to dismantle it, while the Temple of Ledgers prays at the ruined arch to keep the machine's balance in the community's favor.
Imagine a chest-high hulking construct of hammered brass plates riveted to a blackened iron frame. Its torso is a tapered boxwork engraved with ledger lines and tiny numerals; exposed gears and a pendulum beat visibly behind a slatted aperture in its breast. One convex glass eye sits in a segmented faceplate, the other socket filled with a small, ornamental bell that rings when the machine decides. Its limbs are jointed iron rods ending in broad, flat fingers shaped like old coin-scoops. Where a human would have a belt, the Copperskein bears an inlaid brass receptacle with miniature compartments for coin, folded notes, and odd trinkets. Patches of verdigris and scorch marks mar the brass; chains dangle from its hips, entangled with remnants of rope from the fallen bridge. Scale: it stands slightly taller than a human on a ruined paving stone, its shoulder breadth roughly the width of a standard doorway.
