Codexwarden
Binder Construct
A walking stack of leather-bound ledgers, the Codexwarden lumbers through archives with ponderous intent. Its pages creak like a chorus of sighs; steel clasps click as if whispering verdicts. When it attacks, coils of parchment whip and clamp, binding limbs and muffling cries — not simply a guardian but a slow, inexorable librarian that enforces order by entangling flesh in paper and ink.

Multiattack. The Codexwarden makes two Slam attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target takes 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage as pages whip across joints.
Ledger Grasp. Ranged 10 ft. or melee. The Codexwarden lashes a strip of binding parchment at one creature it can see within 10 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be restrained by the parchment (escape DC 12). While restrained this way, the target takes 3 (1d6) slashing damage at the start of each of its turns as pages abrade flesh and is considered 'bound' — it can use an action to attempt a Strength check against DC 12 to free itself. If the Codexwarden is destroyed, bindings loosen immediately.
Codexwardens were never born so much as assembled: apprenticed binders and arcane archivists fused protective wards into refuse ledgers to guard particularly volatile collections. The first known Codexwarden is said to have been created by the Binderate of Kest to police confiscated contracts and forged deeds. Over decades the Binderate refined adhesives, iron clasps, and sigils until the constructs acquired a single-minded directive to preserve and prevent removal of recorded truths. They lair in shuttered reading rooms, vault folios, and sealed stacks of university archives. Wardens are territorial rather than predatory; they seek to bind thieves and vandals, not to hunt the living. Scholars like Master Sibran Pell of the Archivum Vellurn study these constructs with a mixture of reverence and dread, for Codexwardens occasionally 'misfile' — binding not just thieves but those who attempt to alter or even question certain documents. Rumors persist of an abandoned wing where a Codexwarden now guards a ledger that records names people have forgotten, and that opening that book invites the construct to enforce its most severe rubric.
The Codexwarden stands roughly human-sized, about as tall as a doorway's lower panel (6–7 ft.). Its body is a stacked torso of hardbound legal ledgers: cracked leather spines, gilt lettering half-worn away, and numerous steel clasps and buckles. Thin, flexible strips of parchment fringe its shoulders and wrists like ragged feathers; these strips can stiffen into binding tendrils. Where a face might be is a mosaic of typed marginalia and a single circular brass pagewheel inset like an eye. Its limbs are corded rolls of folios bound with twine and reinforced with stitched leather patches; every movement emits the papery rasp of turning pages. Stains of ink, wax seals, and the occasional tattered ribbon mark its surface. Artists should emphasize texture — layered paper edges, embossed covers, rusty clasps — and the sense that the construct is both fragile and inexorably heavy.
